Korean skincare: cleansing

August 9, 2026

Those who are passionate about Korea, those who follow dramas or just K-pop, have surely come across the fantastic, endless steps of Korean skincare at least once!

Endless because there are ten (maybe even one more) original and basic ones, so if you are the type who only goes to bed washing your face, in the best case scenario with the solid bar of soap you use to wash your armpits, then you have to pray that at thirty your best genes will do their part to not make you look like Egyptian mummies. If, however, you are passionate about body and face lotions and you know that body cream is not good for the face, start off on the right foot.

Jokes aside, to break the ice, I absolutely have to make a small introduction, that is, Korean skincare was formulated for Asian customers and only in recent years, when it became popular with the global market, some brands have opened up to formulations for various skin types. Certainly due to genetics, Asian skin ages much less easily than Caucasian skin. You will also have noticed that at the same age as a beautiful Korean actress we look like grandmothers, there is no doubt about this.

If you start skincare in your twenties or, worse, thirty years old, don't expect many rejuvenation results, but you will certainly obtain a slowdown in the aging process thanks to the high hydrating contents of the Asian formulas also accompanied by following a rigid protocol of total protective sunscreens or more than 50 spf.

Skincare is first of all a process that lasts 24 hours a day so it is divided into morning skincare and evening skincare. In fact, it wouldn't be exactly correct to talk about 10 steps because there are steps that are carried out, in my opinion, only in the evening before going to bed, such as the face mask and exfoliation.

Skincare Morning

Step 1: Oily cleaner

Cleansing the skin of the face is an operation that must be carried out in the morning and in the evening. Based on the products used the previous evening and above all based on the type of skin we have, we can decide whether to do a double cleansing with a cleanser oily which should be used first or use only the detergent frothy.

Personally, I only use a foaming cleanser in the morning as I have very delicate and very dry skin, but there are those who feel comfortable doing a double cleanse in the morning as they have oily skin or perhaps notice that during the night they produce a greater quantity of sebum which must be removed with a first oily step. Well yes, the fat you have on your face can be removed with other fat, dermatologists all over the world have been saying this for a lifetime. You can buy oily cleanser or use a little coconut or almond oil (they are also excellent natural remedies for removing make-up) to apply on dry skin with circular movements; Oils should be removed by a foam or water-based cleaner.

I have tried a few so far, as I tend to buy when there are offers on the various skincare sites because the formats tend to be small, 150-200 ml maximum. I am currently using Purito oil cleanser, a Korean brand that you can also find in Italy.

Step 2: Foaming detergent or Foam

The foamy and possibly water-based gel-like cleanser serves to remove all the oily residues that have previously formed and therefore remove dirt molecules that the oil had carried away when it is rubbed on the face.

As I was saying, for myself, in the morning I only cleanse with the water-based cleanser as I don't feel the need to further remove the lipid layer that protects my very dry skin. However, if you have oily, acne-prone skin, I highly recommend double cleansing and following the standard hydration and photoprotection steps.

Well, we started our routine on the right foot, as having clean skin means best preparing it to receive the first treatments of the day. Yes, I said i first, Why Korean skincare is not a hasty aspect of the life of Korean women and men, it is approached first and foremost in a holistic way that transcends simple external well-being, but it is precisely a process of taking care of oneself throughout the day that has been passed down for generations in this country.

In the next articles we will see step by step all the beauty rituals that the Korean industry offers us.
