He created images of the pagodas using a black background, to emphasize their beauty and architectural details.
He studied photography at Chung-Ang University in Korea and graduated with honors from the Italian Institute of Photography in Milan.

Since 1993 he has participated in over 10 group exhibitions, including an invited solo exhibition at the Galleria San Fedele in Milan, consolidating an active career both in Korea and abroad.

INTERVIEW with Yang Hyun Moh

What impression did you have the first time you visited Sicily?

My first visit to Sicily took place during the summer holidays, while I was studying photography in Milan. The first thing that struck me was the surprising vastness of the island. Furthermore, I was fascinated by the warm welcome and kindness of the inhabitants. But what struck me most were the remains from the Roman era and the traces of various historical eras, incredibly well preserved. It really felt like walking in an open-air museum. That first impression still remains vivid in my memory today.

What kind of inspiration did the Greek temples of Agrigento and the Greek theater of Taormina give you?

I still vividly remember the moment I photographed the temples of Agrigento. It was sunset, and the clouds reflected the light, creating a mysterious and evocative atmosphere. In that instant, the image captured by my camera gave me an intense emotion, like listening to a dramatic part of an Italian opera. It has become a scene engraved in my heart, a constant source of inspiration.

What is the place, image or anecdote related to Sicily that has left the most impression on you?

An episode related to an Italian chef friend of mine who works in Korea stuck in my mind. He had never visited Sicily, so I enthusiastically told him how extraordinary Sicilian cuisine was. After his trip he told me: "You were absolutely right, Sicily is truly a delightful place." This little episode left a lasting impression on me and I remember it often: Sicily is truly a treasure of flavors and ingredients.

What is your favorite photo among those taken in Sicily?

In over thirty years of career I have taken thousands of photos all over the world. If I had to choose just ten, among these I would certainly include a photo of the temples of Agrigento and one of a quiet cemetery at the entrance to the village of Enna. These images have a special meaning for me: I believe they contain the profound soul of Sicily.

Is there a difference in your approach between photographing Korean stone pagodas and Sicilian archaeological sites?

The Korean pagodas and temples of Agrigento share many similarities: both have over a thousand years of history, are made of stone and are linked to religious beliefs. For this reason, my photographic approach in the two cases is very similar. Beyond the cultural differences between East and West, what I try to capture is the same essential spirit.

What elements do you consider most important when working with ancient architecture as a subject?

My main objective is to represent the authenticity of the building without altering its original appearance. I am interested in capturing the texture of the stone, the traces of time and the harmony with the surrounding natural landscape. Only when these elements come together harmoniously can the building truly manage to convey its historical value through photography.

Which of the concepts of 'architecture', 'time', 'history' and 'aesthetics' do you think is the most important in your work?

I am first and foremost a photographer. Although architecture, time and history are fundamental components of my work, what I truly pursue is visual beauty. The harmony between these elements must generate an aesthetic emotion. If the public can perceive this beauty in my photos, then I believe I have achieved my goal.

What historical place or site would you like to photograph in the future?

I would like to further explore the ancient sites of Sicily, just as I did with the pagodas in Korea. I want to dedicate time to each place, photograph it at different times of the day and in different seasons. Above all, I would like to discover and document the hidden treasures: the small villages and little-known ancient ruins.

What is the biggest difference you perceived between Italian and Korean cultural heritage?

Both cultures share an extraordinary wealth of religious heritages. I believe this similarity is not accidental: Hellenistic culture developed in two directions — eastward in Asia and westward in Europe. Even if over time each culture has taken a different path, I believe that the aesthetic and spiritual origins are very similar. Discovering these connections is one of the most fascinating aspects of my work.

I'm curious about what led her to print her photos on the hanji. It seemed like a beautiful initiative that combines Korean and Italian culture perfectly.

Looking at Korean pagodas and Sicilian sites, both of which have stood the test of time for over a millennium, I wondered how to pass this heritage down to future generations. Thus was born the idea of printing images on Hanji paper, a traditional Korean material that resists time. I wanted to create a symbolic meeting between East and West, uniting Western subjects with an Eastern support. If in a thousand years these images still reach our descendants, it will be my most significant cultural contribution as a photographer.
